Jim Bailey, Principal – Thames Valley
Jim Bailey joined the FD Centre in September 2016 after over 25 years years of experience driving shareholder value creation in companies spanning 3 continents and 15 countries. He worked in strategy, corporate development and finance and positions have included Director of M&A, CFO, CEO and Executive Board Member. The bulk of his experience is with Telecoms, Media and Technology companies starting with large corporates (Inmarsat, Cable & Wireless Communications, Orascom Telecom) before starting his own consulting and advisory business in 2007. Other sector experience includes retail, financial services, oil & gas, manufacturing and construction.
A significant leadership role was as CFO of Telecel International Ltd which was a mobile operator with operations across sub-Saharan Africa. He led a restructuring process that involved the sale of 12 subsidiaries with a cumulative value in excess of USD 600 million and the re-scheduling and repayment of over USD 400 million of vendor & bank finance. Prior to this he was a member of a Strategy Task Force that oversaw the largest merger in UK history and worked for an early cloud services business completing 7 acquisitions in a period of 10 months. In all he has led over 30 M&A transactions on both the buy and sell side, for public and private companies including domestic and cross-border transactions with values from under GBP 1 million and above. He has also been involved in extensive operational and financial restructuring projects.
His consulting company was established to provide part-time FD services and advice bringing his previous experience to start-ups and SMEs. He specializes in business planning, strategy development, mergers and acquisitions, fund-raising, restructuring and executive management and leverages his broad experience and perspective in helping senior managers, boards and shareholders to tackle day to day issues and challenges. He has also worked on a variety of business development projects from SEIS/EIS funding, EU grant programmes, spectrum bids and licencing, and has an extensive contact base of VC and PE firms as well as professional advisers. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Calgary and an MBA from London Business School and is married with 2 children. In his spare time he enjoys spending time with his kids as well as reading, skiing and mountain-biking.
