Antonio Filippi, Principal – Thames Valley
Antonio started his career in the Unilever Management Training Scheme, where he gained early exposure to blue-chip finance processes and systems as well as acquiring a taste for the more commercial aspects of finance through his work at Birds Eye Walls.
As a CIMA-qualified management accountant, he firmly believes a Finance Director should have as much commercial business acumen as technical knowledge and gain a deep understanding of (and passion for) the product, technology or services of his companies.
After a few years in blue-chip consumer-goods roles, he moved to the SME arena as head of finance for a HR software company that, through organic growth and M&A activity, developed in a small multinational with an enviable list of big brand clients.
For the last ten years he developed his passion for the entrepreneurial sector and gained a deep understanding of the needs and challenges facing growing companies (and their owners/founders), with wide hands-on operational and strategic experience extending to general management, operations, HR and commercial negotiations.
Prior to joining the FD Centre in 2014 he worked for a few years as an independent part-time FD with clients ranging from social internet start-ups to ICON, the world leader in the industrialization of open-source computer fluid dynamics software (vehicle design, aerospace, architecture) which he recently led through a majority sale to a Japanese corporation.
He is currently President of the Central London branch of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and loves supporting young start-ups through his involvement as a Mentor at Accelerate Cambridge, Cambridge University Judge Business School’s start-ups accelerator program. Antonio also holds a Ph.D. in Quantum Physics from Imperial College, London.
